About Five Nights at Freddy's
Five Nights at Freddy's (FNAF) is a horror game series that has won praise from players around the world. It stands out not only for its scares but for a deep story that unfolds across multiple games, books, and spin-offs. Understanding what FNAF is and why it works so well means looking at its setting, its cast, and how you play.
Most of the action takes place at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a fictional family restaurant where animatronic characters perform for children during the day. After closing time, those same machines take on a different role and begin to stalk the building. You take the job of the night guard and must last five shifts using only what the office gives you: a network of security cameras, doors, and lights. Your tools and power are limited, so every choice matters.
As you progress, you uncover more of the world's backstory. The animatronics are tied to William Afton, a restaurant owner and inventor who is haunted by the spirits of children he harmed. Afton is said to have studied "remnants"—a concept that blurs the line between soul and machine—and his experiments lead to creations such as Springtrap, Scraptrap, and Glitchtrap. The series is known for hiding clues in plain sight: creator Scott Cawthon has often left hints and teasers on his website and inside the games, giving fans plenty to piece together.
Characters
FNAF features a large cast of animatronics and humans. Here are some of the most well-known characters you will encounter.
Freddy Fazbear
The main mascot of the restaurant: a brown bear in a top hat and black bowtie who leads the band. By day he appears cheerful; at night he becomes hostile. He is associated with the spirit of a child named Gabriel.
Bonnie
A blue bunny who plays guitar in the band. He is among the first to become active at night and typically approaches from the left door. He is linked to the spirit of a boy called Jeremy.
Chica
A yellow chick often shown with a cupcake; she plays the tambourine in the band. She is one of the animatronics that most often uses the right office door. Her story is tied to a girl named Susie.
Foxy
A red fox who stays in Pirate Cove. He can seem idle by day but becomes a threat at night. If the player does not monitor him, he will sprint down the hallway toward the office. He is connected to the spirit of a child named Fritz.
Golden Freddy
An enigmatic figure who can appear at random—sometimes teleporting into the office, sometimes showing up on cameras or posters. Staring at him for too long can trigger hallucinations or glitches. He is tied to the spirit of Cassidy, sometimes called "The One You Shouldn't Have Killed."
William Afton
The main antagonist of the series. Also known as the Purple Guy or, in some works, Dave Miller, he is a serial killer who harmed many children at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza and elsewhere. He built complex animatronics from scrap and advanced tech. After being lured into a spring-lock suit by the ghosts of his victims, he becomes trapped inside his own creation—Springtrap.
Michael Afton
William Afton's son and a key figure in the story. He has worked as a night guard at several Freddy Fazbear locations and appears under different names in different installments, including Mike Schmidt and Eggs Benedict.
